La Lanterna

.....Guiglia is situated East of the Panaro River 
and offers a wonderful view of the plains 
into which it drains.  
That’s how it got the name 
“The Balcony of Emilia”....

The “Sassi di Roccamalatina”  

About 25% of the municipality of Guiglia 
is a natural park 
– the Regional Park of “Sassi di Roccamalatina” – 
with its spectacular outcrops of sandstone rock and 
rich flora and fauna.  
There are lots of areas of scenic and natural interest.

Guiglia was dominated by the Canossa family until 1115 
and upon the death of Matilda became the Lordship of Guiglia.  
In 1405 it passed to the Estense family after a number of different rulers.
The Public Tower, now known as the 
Clock Tower, bears the date of 1535 
and is part of the castle .....
The village’s church dates to 1474 
with further work on the facade 
in the 19th century
